On Target Concealed Carry - Cincinnati Ohio - FAQ Section
What part of town are you located in?
The class is held at our home in Batavia. We are just north of Clermont Mercy Hospital. From State Route 32 and I-275 it will take about 10 minutes to get to the house. We will email you the exact address once you sign up for the class.
What do I need to get my Ohio Concealed Handgun License?
There are two basic ways to get your Ohio concealed handgun License. You may take the NRA Basic Pistol Class or a course offered by Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission. Either of these courses will provide the necessary training to apply for your Ohio Concealed carry License. At On Target Concealed Carry we offer the NRAís Basic Pistol class. At the end of the class, assuming you complete all the necessary testing and training, you'll be given a certificate that you take to your local sheriff's office. We will go over the application process in class. You can also apply for a Florida Concealed Carry license with this class.
What do I need to bring to the Basic Pistol class?
We have our class structured in such a way that the only thing you will need to bring is your ammo. We understand that there are many first time shooters out there who are in search of training before they purchase a gun, and that is why we have the ìcome as you are mentalityî. We will provide a notebook, a few pamphlets, Ohioís Concealed Carry booklet, the NRAís basic pistol book, and a CD containing resources and a few helpful PDF files. If you are a compulsive note taker, an extra notebook might not be a bad idea. Bring your handgun (if you have one), and at least 250 rounds of factory loaded ammo. If you do not have a handgun let us know and we will send you a list of what we have to use. If you donít know what to get for ammo let us know and we will point you in the right direction. You'll also need $5 for a range fee. We shoot in the early afternoon, just after lunch. The range time is outdoors, so dress appropriately, and we'll car pool from the class room to the range.
What ammo should I bring to use your guns?
You can contact us ahead of the class time and we will send you a list of the guns we have to use. Depending on your level of skill depends on what ammo you will need. For new shooters we suggest you bring at least 50 rounds of 9mm Luger, at least 50 rounds of 38 special, a box of 22 LR, all FMJ (full metal jacket). Most 22 LR ammunition comes in boxes of 500 for about 15 dollars. Good places to buy ammo include Shooters Supply in Loveland and Wal-Mart. Depending on where you live in the city there are a few others to check out, let us know and we can point you in the right direction. Winchester, Remington and Federal are recommended (and reasonably priced). If you plan to shoot our guns, do not bring Wolf, Blazer (Blazer Brass is OK), or other steel cases brands of ammo, they tend to shoot dirty and the steel case can be hard on extractors. Also, do not buy +p ammo if you plan to use our guns. PLEASE MAKE SURE TO LEAVE ANY AMMO AND YOUR GUN IN YOUR CAR. You wonít need them until the range time. If you don't know what to buy, feel free to call or email and we can help you out. Also, if you have eye and ear protection, bring it. If not, we'll supply it. When you are driving to the class and the range make sure to follow the federal transport laws. You want to have all magazines and speed loaders unloaded, along with your gun. Lock your gun in a box and, place your ammo in a separate compartment. The best way to do this is put the gun in the trunk, in a locking box, and the ammo in your glove box.
How do I carry in Ohio?
The first step would be to get a Concealed carry license in your State of residence. Ohio has reciprocity with several states in the country, including the nation's most popular license, Florida. If you do happen to live in a state where Ohio does not recognize your permit, like Indiana, the next best thing to do would be to apply for a Florida non-resident License. Our NRA Basic Pistol class lets you apply for a Florida non-resident concealed carry license. We'll give you the details during class, along with a Florida packet if you require one.
Do I have to take an entire Saturday to attend Basic Pistol?
You do not have to if it is not possible for you to. You may split a class up over 2 Saturdays if you would like. We do try to be available for private classes you pick the dates/times, but because of the busy schedule we keep it can prove to be difficult. We usually try to hold two regular classes per month. We can do the range time on another day under special circumstances. Call for more info.
Can I bring someone along who isnít going to get their permit?
Absolutely, the class is an excellent opportunity to learn about firearm safety. If you do wish to apply for your permit you must be at least 21 years old per Ohio law, but anyone can take the class. If you are under 18 your parent or guardian must be at the class. If the person requires certification, materials, etc. they will be charged the per-person fee of $100. If not, there is no charge except for the range fee.
12 hours is a long time to sit, are there breaks?
We do take a break for lunch, along with a bathroom break every so often. You can get up to get a refill on coffee or a plate of fresh out of the oven cookies when they are ready. We are pretty laid back during class. There will be a test, so youíll need to pay attention, but it's not a boot camp and we are not tactical ninjas. We also try to incorporate hands on learning as much as possible. When we break for lunch feel free to head to one of the restaurants close by. We will also be providing dinner. Remember this is fun!
Do we have to stay for the entire 12 hours?
If you want your certificate then the answer is yes. There are is a lot of pertinent information that you will find useful, regardless of your skill level. Along with that Ohio law dictates that the course is 12 hours. We will have 10 hours of class time and 2 hours spent at the range. Besides, who wouldnít want to talk about guns for 12 hours?
I have a physical disability, will that be a problem?
No problem. We have worked with physical disabilities before, and we have been able to find a way for people to defend themselves. Let us know in advance if you have any special needs, there are a few stairs at the class and the range requires a little bit of walking. We can make special arrangements when necessary.
250 rounds is a lot and ammo prices are up, can I use my .22 LR or is here a caliber limit?
Sure. As long as it is a real firearm that is no problem. Generally speaking a hit with a 22 is better than a miss with a 44, but the point is to become proficient with a more substantial caliber that a 22 for self defense. That being said a .22 LR is fine for practice. We actually start first time shooters out on 22 lr. It is a great way to focus on fundamentals and build confidence. We would like to see new shooters try something a little more suitable for personal defense, but we only push you as far as you are willing to go.
Where should I buy a handgun or ammo for Basic Pistol?
We are going to steer you clear of buying a handgun before the class if you donít have one already. We will go over a few tips on buying in class. However, our favorite place to go for virtually all things gun would be Shooters Supply in Loveland. Dan and Marv are top notch guys who provide the best customer service out there. We like the idea of supporting the local guys. A few other good places would be Wal-Mart, Dicks, or Bass Pro. If you want to order over the internet Cheaper than Dirt, Sportsmans Guide, Cabelas, and Ammo Man are great places to check out. Try not to procrastinate in buying ammo, it seems to be a little harder to find nowadays.
What type of payment do you accept?
Like Dave Ramsey always says, ìCash is King.î You can pay when you get here with cash. If you would like to pay by check let us know 2 weeks ahead of the class and weíll let you know where to send it. If you are a fan of plastic then just click the pay no button on the home page and follow the prompts. We understand that there are at times unforeseen circumstances that keep you from attending class, if that is the case then you can just reschedule or we can refund your payment.
What else do you teach?
We are currently offer two pistol classes - Basic Pistol (what you take to get your CHL), and Personal Range Time. Personal Range Time is intended for those who want to spend time at the range with an instructor to work on accuracy. Keep an eye out for other advanced classes we will be offering in the future. Details for both classes are available on the main page of the web site.
